I have always been a glass half empty rather than a glass half full kind of girl, a mindset that I have worked, and to be honest, am still working, hard on to change. I was reminded of this recently while working client-side in their offices, and when asked what I would be doing next once my contract ended and I left the team I began to list the projects I was working on. The responses I got momentarily stunned me because I started to see what I do, my achievements and the progress I have made through their eyes. And was for me an eye-opener; a reminder to appreciate and focus on what I have achieved rather than dwelling on what I have not.
Coming at a time when I was feeling particularly sorry for myself over not having yet fulfilled some major goals in life, and wondering when the success would come – read the sustainable income streams to have the life I want – my temporary colleagues exclamations of ‘you are living the life’, ‘I want to do what you do’ left me feeling conflicted and a bit guilty for not appreciating what I have achieved so much more than I currently do. And I do appreciate what I have achieved; I just never really let myself feel it as much as I should.
Going through this exchange brought home the fact that I love what I do, and whilst I still have so much more to do towards achieving my vision of success, I am on a beautiful journey that gives me the opportunity to inspire and, I hope, have an impact on the lives I get to interact with be it in person or online.
So I have committed to making a more conscious effort to appreciate what I have achieved to date as I move forward through the the year. And I invite you to do the same.
